Date Squares

Sweet, buttery, and wonderfully comforting, these classic Date Squares layer a rich, naturally sweet date filling between two crumbly layers of hearty oatmeal goodness. The contrast of soft, jammy dates with the golden, slightly crisp oat topping makes every bite deeply satisfying. Ingredients
Filling:
1/2 lb. Dates (cut up)
1/2 cup Sugar (Optional)
2/3 cup Water
*Cinnamon to taste
Crumb Layers:
1 1/4 cups Flour
1 1/2 cups Rolled Oats
1 cup Brown Sugar, packed
1 teaspoon Baking Soda
1/2 teaspoon Salt
*Cinnamon to taste
1 cup Margarine
Instructions
Filling:
Combine dates, sugar, and water in a pot.
Bring to a boil, then reduce to simmer.
Allow to simmer until mushy, approximately 5 minutes.
Crumb Layers:
Mix dry ingredients together and then cut in margarine until crumbly.
Press 1/2 to 2/3 of mixture into a greased 9 by 9 pan.
Spread with date mixture.
Sprinkle with remaining crumbs and press lightly.
Bake at 350F for 30 minutes.
